Isakson Living's Underground Parking Garage Plan and the Potential Impact on Aquifers
The second Isakson Living proposal includes plans to build an underground parking garage, which could adversely impact the naturally occurring underground aquifers. Also, the blasting may affect nearby home foundations. Therefore, at the very least, an environmental impact study should be completed before drilling under the ground, especially if the drilling would be done after already re-contouring the property by blasting the current hilly property flat. An aquifer is basically an underground river, a "layer of water-bearing permeable rock or unconsolidated materials from which groundwater can be extracted using a water well," (Wikipedia) and often flow into any adjacent creeks, rivers and streams. This map from the U.S. Geological Survey shows the types of aquifers in Georgia. The Sewell Mill Creek watershed is part of the Apalachicola - Chattahoochee - Flint River basin, and has crystalline-rock aquifers.
Because the Isakson Living proposal includes underground parking garages, care should be taken to determine the impact on the aquifers, or underground streams, located next to Sewell Mill Creek. |
